What does it really take to lead a membership organisation well in 2026?
Not just to keep the lights on or to hit renewal targets, or even satisfy a board report. But to genuinely lead with clarity, confidence and a strategy that holds up under pressure?
That question is at the heart of why Cantarus made the decision to fund five bursary places on The Leadership Blueprint’s inaugural cohort in 2025.
And it’s the same question driving us to open applications for Cohort 2 – starting early 2027.
Why Cantarus said “yes” to funding five bursary places
When Cantarus first came across The Leadership Blueprint, it wasn’t a difficult conversation.
With more than 20 years’ experience supporting membership organisations, professional bodies and charities, Cantarus works alongside leadership teams navigating digital transformation, member experience, CRM strategy and long-term organisational change.
They see firsthand what happens when leadership is stretched thin: digital transformation stalls, staff burn out, boards and executives pull in different directions, and member value quietly erodes. They backed The Leadership Blueprint because they believe in addressing that challenge at the source.
When asked what “strong leadership” looks like in the membership sector right now, and why it matters more than ever for businesses in 2026, Lee Adams, CEO of Cantarus, told us:
“Across the membership sector, many organisations are not lacking ambition, they’re simply navigating continual change, competing priorities and growing complexity simultaneously. What we’re increasingly seeing is that strong leadership in 2026 is becoming less about driving constant transformation and more about creating clarity, alignment, and confidence amidst uncertainty.
The organisations making the greatest progress are often the ones simplifying complexity, helping teams focus on what matters most and creating more connected experiences – where people, priorities, member value and long-term direction feel aligned rather than fragmented. Increasingly, strong leadership is also about creating environments where people feel connected to the purpose, direction and experience they are collectively trying to build.”
“Having spent more than two decades helping membership organisations navigate digital change, Cantarus has seen first-hand that successful transformation depends as much on leadership, clarity and organisational alignment as it does on technology. Supporting leadership development therefore felt like a natural extension of the work we already do with organisations across the sector.”
What strong leadership looks like right now
For Cantarus especially, sitting at the intersection of technology, strategy and the membership sector, the question of solid leadership in 2026 is one they think about deeply. The answer, it turns out, isn’t what it used to be.
A few years ago, the pressure was to transform: go digital, restructure, innovate, disrupt. That pressure hasn’t disappeared, but the leaders who are thriving today are the ones who’ve learnt to create clarity inside complexity, not just respond to it. They’re the ones whose teams know what matters and why. Whose boards are genuinely aligned, not just informed. Whose members feel the difference between an organisation that’s reacting and one that’s leading.
That’s exactly what The Leadership Blueprint is built to develop.
Five bursary leaders, one cohort = real impact.
Alongside the main group, it is thanks to the Cantarus bursary that five additional senior professionals from membership and non-profit organisations joined Cohort 1 of The Leadership Blueprint in 2025. This included people who, in many cases, would not have otherwise known about the programme.
For Cantarus, investing in leadership capability is another way of investing in the long-term strength of the membership sector.
Across the first cohort, participants brought challenges that will feel familiar to many reading this: stagnating income streams, staff teams showing signs of burnout, trustees asking hard questions without always understanding the operational reality, and digital strategies that had been deprioritised for one too many budget cycles.
What they found with The Leadership Blueprint wasn’t a generic leadership course. They found a programme designed specifically for the sector they work in – one that took the complexity of their roles seriously and gave them practical tools to act differently, not just think differently.
The results have been magnificent. Leaders returning to their organisations with renewed strategic clarity. Teams re-energised around shared priorities. Boards better aligned with executive direction. And, perhaps most importantly, a peer network of people facing the same pressures who now have each other.
What does the Leadership Blueprint actually Deliver?
The Leadership Blueprint is a 10-month programme (4 face-to-face sessions, 3 online sessions) for senior membership and non-profit professionals and opens with a single, high-impact in-person day.
It focuses on diagnostics that surfaces strategy gaps, identifies where energy is being lost and creates alignment between your leadership team and board. That first day sets the foundation for the following strategic modules, delivered through four in-person across 10 months in London, supported by online workshops between each one.
By the end of the programme, participants will have built real capability across the areas that matter most right now, including:
- Governance and trustee relationships
- Building resilient and motivated teams
- Digital transformation, AI and data-driven decision making
- Understanding financial sustainability and member value.
Everything is designed to translate directly into results, not just in theory, but in your organisation, with your team, facing your specific challenges. And the peer network you build along the way? That’s one of the parts past participants value most.
Who is this programme for?
If you’re a senior leader in a membership organisation or non-profit, and any of the following sounds familiar, this programme was certainly built for you:
- Income has plateaued and you’re not sure where the next stage of growth comes from
- Your team is stretched and showing signs of burnout, but headcount isn’t the answer
- Your board and executive are not as aligned as they need to be
- Digital transformation feels like it’s always one budget cycle away
- You want to lead with more clarity, control, confidence, strategy, curiosity and empathy but you’re too close to day-to-day pressures to get there alone
The Leadership Blueprint gives you the space, the structure and the peer support to step back and move forward.
Cohort 2 opens January 2027, including a limited number of Cantarus bursary places
Cantarus is proud to have funded a limited number of bursary places for Cohort 1, which was reserved for leaders who would benefit most, but face financial barriers to participation.
For Cohort 2 taking place in 2027, places are expected to move quickly. Group sizes are deliberately kept small to preserve the quality of peer learning and facilitation.
Ready to reset your leadership?
Four strategic modules. Four focused days. Three online sessions. Ten months of genuine development and a peer network that lasts far longer.
If you’re ready to lead with more clarity and confidence, and want to build an organisation that can thrive rather than just survive, Cohort 2 is your perfect opportunity.
As organisations continue to navigate increasing complexity, the ability to lead with clarity, confidence and purpose will become an even greater differentiator.
